Strengthening health systems to reach the poor
Health systems often provide fewer or poorer-quality services to the poor than to the rich. Health coverage priorities ensure universal coverage of public health, equitable access, efficiency and effectiveness through an empowered cadre of health personnel. These reforms seek to enhance the quality of health care available to India's rural population and strengthen public health systems. Several initiatives to improve health systems are -
- Primary Health Centres to be re-organised and upgraded
- Upgrading all block Primary Health Centres to hospitals
- Expanding mobile health care for rural communities
- Establishing neonatal care centres at district hospitals
- Strengthening community-managed emergency referral and transport systems
- Proving basic obstetric care at rural hospitals
